In Los Angeles, upgrading the whole bathroom means incorporating a level of comfort. Most often they are made of stone, porcelain, quartz, or resin, so the shape lends a sculptural note. Large curbless walk-in showers are distinguished with surface materials. Linear drains are trending because they are more aesthetically pleasing. Rain showers are favored, but you won’t find multiple showerheads due to water restrictions.

Sweeten handpicks the best general contractors to match each project’s location, budget, scope, and style.

How to Remove Smoke Odor After a Fire Fire Smoke Odor Removal

how to get rid of smoke smell in house

Mosquitoes are drawn to people mostly by scent, although they also use temperature, visual cues, and movements to target you. What keeps mosquitoes away from you is anything that disrupts these cues. Bug sprays, for instance, interfere with a mosquito’s ability to smell you. Mosquitoes are inevitable to some degree, but you can take measures to keep them at bay if you understand them better. Eliminating standing water in your yard is essential for prevention.

How to Keep Mosquitoes Away Naturally

Need to get rid of cigarette smell on your belongings or yourself quickly? There are a variety of effective ways to get rid of smoke smell fast no matter the situation. Keep reading for some quick fixes and some long-term strategies for getting rid of lingering tobacco smell. Use a cloth to wipe it over different surfaces in the home, or put some on cotton balls. You can also do the same with essential oils or use scented candles to get rid of the smell. House plants are also excellent at absorbing chemicals and purifying the air.

How we reviewed this article:

Completely remove all curtains, area rugs, cushions, blankets, and other fabric from the affected area of the house. Also consider laundering towels, sheets, and any other fabrics that may have been exposed to smoke. If you are laundering fabrics on your own, keep in mind it may take several cycles to completely remove odor. Try using a cup of regular laundry detergent mixed with a cup of distilled white vinegar for stubborn odors. After a fire, big or small, the smell can stick around for a while—and the longer it sits, the longer it can set into your furniture and belongings.

How to Get Smoke Smell Out of House: 15 Methods

Let it sit for at least four hours—eight is better—before vacuuming away. Don’t forget to clean items like plates, cups, and silverware. The inside of the dishwasher likely has not been affected so feel free to run it, but leave the dishes in there until the house is completely smoke-free.

Steam cleaner

It even gets into the wallpaper, while layers of tar and nicotine can stain hard surfaces and also lead to a smoky smell in the house. However, cleaning all of these and other surfaces will have little effect if you still have ashtrays around the house. Empty all ashtrays, including makeshift ones, and throw them away or store them out of the way.

Step 2: Prepare Cleaning Solution

Use a carpet cleaner, ideally a steam cleaner, to get deep into the pile of the carpet. A professional steam cleaning service may provide the best results and you can have them steam clean the drapes and other fabrics in the house, too. Set reminders so you’re certain to change your air filters regularly. Many experts recommend changing them quarterly, although if you’re battling cigarette smoke, pet hair, or other ongoing pollutants, changing the filters more often is advised. You have a variety of tools at your disposal for eradicating smoke smells.

Learning how to get rid of smoke smell in the house isn’t necessarily hard, though you’ll need to roll up your sleeves and put in a little elbow grease. Let the baking soda sit for at least 2 hours, and then vacuum it up using an upholstery attachment.

Removing cigarette smell from your breath

Paper items like books and photos can be very difficult to clean without ruining them, so take any valuable items to a professional book or photo restoration company. Before you start removing the smoke smell, it’s important to understand how smoke works. If you know you're going to smoke, prepping your space can help reduce the smell altogether.

Have vinegar or activated charcoal on hand.

Work in a grid so that you cover the entire wall as you move the ladder. Your home will only be as clean as the tools and supplies you choose. Our essential cleaning supply list will put you on the fast-track to a sparkling home without breaking the bank (or filling your space up with things you don’t need). A rain barrel is a useful element in the garden, but it can also be a source of mosquito eggs and larvae. Add it to your rain barrel to kill any mosquitoes that enter it. Add a natural soap product to create a slick surface mosquitoes can’t land on.

The good news is smoke odor can be removed from a home, although it takes hard work. If you’ve experienced a fire at your home, use the following tips to restore your home to its pre-loss condition. It’s bad enough when you’re in a public space and have to breathe in someone’s secondhand smoke. If you’re a non-smoker and you move into a house previously occupied by a smoker, you’ll know immediately. The smell, stains, and general sense of unhealthiness will be pretty obvious—and gross.

This is where those hack-y products do come in—but leaving them in bowls around the house isn’t going to do as much as actually scrubbing them into the affected materials. If you smoke, you’ve probably become used to the smell and don’t realize how strong it is. If you want to get rid of cigarette odor, asking a nonsmoker to sniff out the situation will help.

In her spare time, she loves to watch sports and has a mini-obsession with football. Anything that has had a cigarette in it will keep the offensive smell. Start by throwing away any ashtrays, cigarette butts, packets and lighters. Professionals tend to recommend ozone generators for extreme cases. However, airing out a room naturally is also a very popular and successful method.

Check all air ducts and remove any blockages or dust that might have smoke residue in them. If that doesn’t work, then try refinishing them, sanding them back. This will remove the layer of flooring that’s clinging to the smoke smell. There are a variety of tips out there promising to get smoky stinks out of your upholstery, carpet, and nostrils—but a lot of them are temporary. Here’s what will actually work, and what will only temporarily mask the smell.

Buy a new air filter to replace the existing one harboring smoke molecules. Cigarette smoke can ruin a house, especially if the smoker continually smokes in the same area. Eventually, it permanently stains walls and ceilings, making it impossible to remove. Activated charcoal is another great natural way to remove odors. Activated charcoal contains a large amount of oxygen which makes the charcoal porous (1). Wipe, dust, and clean down hard surfaces like tables and wooden furniture, as well as kitchen tops, cookers, and anything else in the home.

Based on rumors, Pullmantur's liners were either to be scrapped or sold (change ownership). The fleet's oldest vessel was Sovereign (1988-built, 2015-refurbished). Sovereign's scheduled for 2020 drydock refurbishment was canceled. R-Five left Pullmantur later in 2005, when Pullmantur purchased R-Six and renamed her Blue Dream (the marketing name previously assigned to R-Five). Delphin Seereisen (the charterer of R-Seven/now Azamara Quest) had meanwhile gone bankrupt, and in 2006 R-Seven was also bought by Pullmantur and renamed Blue Moon.

Passengers have the option of transforming molten glass into one of eight different projects, such as a bowl or vase. Works by current pop artists like Peter Max and Romero Britto are also featured in addition to animation cells from studios like Disney, Warner Bros., Hanna-Barbera and Metro Goldwyn Mayer. That arrangement has become strained in recent years, as Max has suffered from dementia and stopped painting, allegedly signing pieces churned out by assistants.

MSC Cruises cabins and suites: Everything you need to know

what is msc cruise line

Three more giant new MSC Cruises vessels are on order for delivery over the next few years that will add another 15,000 berths. Indeed, four MSC Cruises ships are less than a third the size of its biggest ship (the recently unveiled MSC World Europa) and rank among the smallest of cruise ships operated by the major mass-market lines. That means you have a lot of choices when it comes to picking the perfect MSC Cruises ship for you. In addition to entertainment spaces, the interiors of MSC Cruises ships are loaded with other venues where passengers can kick back and let loose day and night, including a seemingly endless array of bars, lounges and nightspots.

Reviewed: MSC Cruise Wi-Fi Service (Speed, Reliability, Cost, & More)

While smaller than the newest MSC ships, both the Armonia and Divina have a classic European feel and are generally well-regarded among those who prefer a smaller ship experience. It’s worth noting that many of these activities come with an additional fee. This is one of the reasons we often say that when booking a cruise, make sure to look at the base fare and any expenses you’ll encounter along the way. In addition to the ships that ply the waters of the Caribbean, MSC Cruises recently invested heavily in the construction and opening of its own private Bahamian island called Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

MSC Cruises loyalty program

Unlike frequent cruiser programs at some of its competitors, MSC doesn’t offer free cruises or discounts on single supplements to its most loyal customers. With several attention-grabbing new ship launches and a hard push into the U.S. market, MSC Cruises is a name that’s hard to ignore in the world of cruising at the moment. Although MSC Cruises' cabin types are straightforward, the line's add-on experiences can complicate things a bit. Last but not least, MSC Meraviglia will be alternating between cruises to Bermuda and cruises to Florida and the Bahamas from New York, from where the ship operates year-round. The Eastern Caribbean itineraries include stops at Nassau, Bahamas; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Ocean Cay.

What is the MSC Yacht Club?

This 2-level suite features a master bedroom on the second level along with an additional double bed on the first level. Each small room has a single bed that can be converted into a sofa during the day. If 1 person buys a drink package, everyone else in that stateroom also needs to purchase a package. This package is for children ages 3-11 and includes everything available in the Non-Alcoholic Package for Adults. If you’d prefer to purchase your beverages ahead of time, you can opt for one of MSC’s beverage packages.

You can leave your toddlers at the clubs, which have dedicated staff, or stay and play with them. On the line's Meraviglia and Seaside Class ships, top-deck amenities include sprawling back-of-the-ship water parks with multiple waterslides, ropes courses and watery play areas for the little ones. The five Meraviglia and Meraviglia Plus Class vessels also have soaring interior mall-like spaces called Gallerias with bars, restaurants and retail shops, as does the new MSC World Europa. Every vessel has at least one or more main dining rooms and a casual buffet where meals are included in the fare. On the line's recently unveiled MSC Euribia, for instance, there are nearly a dozen distinct eateries, as well as a number of bars and lounges that serve at least small bites. MSC Seashore has five specialty restaurants that feature waterfront, outdoor seating on the ship's boardwalk.

With four tiers ranging from Classic to Diamond, members earn points based on the length of cruises they take, the ‘experience’ they book, and their onboard spend. If the MSC experience is too hectic for you, Yacht Club could be a solution. But at the prices—typically 3-4 times a standard fare—you may also want to consider dedicated luxury or small ship lines. MSC Cruises ships are loaded with things to do, including vast theaters and show lounges, multiple bars and restaurants, boutiques, casinos, and relaxing spa facilities. MSC Euribia is the second LNG-powered cruise ship to join the MSC Cruises fleet. The only drawback is that these staterooms have no balconies and no in-room dining areas, but they do include all the perks you'd find in Yacht Club cabins.

Entertainment, onboard features like pools and waterslides, and kids’ activities are also included. You’ll pay extra for specialty restaurants, alcoholic drinks, specialty non-alcoholic drinks, shore excursions, and some onboard activities. Many of the credit card offers that appear on this site are from credit card companies from which we receive financial compensation. This compensation may impact how and where products appear on this site (including, for example, the order in which they appear).

MSC Cruises may be the biggest cruise line you've never heard of — assuming you're an American. This has led us to launch many life-changing initiatives over the years. As noted above, it just debuted in June, and it's currently sailing in Europe. Next in line, the Musica class was kicked off in 2006 with MSC Cruises’s introduction of lead ship MSC Musica. The class also includes MSC Orchestra, MSC Poesia and MSC Magnifica. MSC Cruises is renowned for its affordability, with off-season cruises in the Mediterranean often available for under $100 per person, per night, and to the Caribbean for under $75.

MSC Cruises: What To Expect Onboard This Fast-Growing Cruise Line

Each of the vessels has at least four places to eat including two main restaurants, a casual buffet and a sushi bar. They also carry significantly fewer passengers than the World Class and Meraviglia Class ships. MSC Fantasia and MSC Splendida carry 3,274 passengers at double occupancy (4,363 with every berth filled). The slightly bigger MSC Divina and MSC Preziosa carry 3,502 passengers at double occupancy. MSC World Europa has 13 dining venues, including the new-for-the-line Chef's Garden Kitchen (an outlet focused on microgreens) and La Pescaderia, a traditional seafood grill with alfresco seating.

The new MSC World Europa, for instance, has a whopping six pools and 14 hot tubs, making it one of the most pool-covered ships at sea. The watery offerings also include an aquapark with multiple waterslides that integrate virtual reality technology. The cruise ship also provides the largest kids’ space in the entire MSC Cruises fleet. That space will include three new concept spaces for teenagers aged 12 to 17.

The following year MSC took over the Lauro cruise line, a one-ship fleet consisting of just the Achille Lauro (which had infamously been hijacked by Palestinian terrorists three years earlier). It remained a two-ship cruise line for six years until 1995, when two more ships, Rhapsody and Melody, were added to the fleet and MSC Cruises was formally established as a subsidiary of the larger MSC Group. One year later the Achille Lauro, while sailing a passenger cruise, caught fire off the coast of Africa and sank. Most cruise lines seem to be pushing toward full-scale production shows. Norwegian Cruise Lines, for example has productions of Footloose and Kinky Boots on some of its newer ships.

When you sail with MSC Cruises, you can expect function, style and comfort, regardless of the cabin type you book. While most suites are designed for double occupancy, some suite accommodations on MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Magnifica can sleep up to five people. These cabins are available with the line's Bella and Fantastica experiences.

PizzaFor pizza to be pointed out as a difference with other cruise lines, you know the pie on MSC must be pretty good. Not as Tech SavvyThere’s no doubt that technology has come a long way in cruising. These days you can do everything online from checking in to buying excursions to navigating the ship via the cruise line app.

Itinerary Southern Secret

doubtful sound overnight cruise

Until you visit you can’t understand the sheer size of these fiords and the cliff faces. We were lucky to see four groups of dolphins who put on a show. From the magical sights and abundance of wildlife to the memorable experience of staying on board a ship, this is one of the absolute best things you can do on the South Island. For a restful after-dinner activity, I headed to the viewing area for a nature talk by Div (our resident nature guide). This was a fab way to get the lowdown on this wild region of New Zealand. From clips of previous animal encounters and fascinating facts to learn about conservation efforts and what we can do to help, the talks were the perfect way to conclude each day.

Things to do in Fiordland

For the most part, the boat ride is quite calm and what you get to experience is well worth a few minutes or hours of nausea (in my opinion, at least!). I’d recommend stocking up on your seasickness medication of choice; Sea-Legs is a popular option in Aotearoa New Zealand and can be purchased at any pharmacy. From Manapouri you will join your tour group and take a boat across Lake Manapouri and then a coach bus across the Wilmot Pass. These boats and buses are only operated for visitors as part of a tour of Doubtful Sound by cruise or kayak – you’re not able to independently visit Doubtful Sound as a tourist. With its rugged peaks, verdant rainforest and twisting, hidden inlets, Doubtful Sound will take your breath away.

Coach connections available from Queenstown and Te Anau. Anchor in a sheltered cove to explore the pristine shoreline by kayak or tender craft, or take a refreshing swim in the tranquil waters. Exploring the fiord at your own pace is one of the highlights of the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise. You can expect to see seals, dolphins, water birds and waterfalls in a true glacial fjord.

Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruises

Milford Sound is around 5-6 hours (one-way) from Queenstown and around 3 hours from Te Anau by road. You’ll start by departing from the Milford Sound wharf in the late afternoon before cruising through Milford Sound accompanied by our specialist nature guide. They’ll explain the history and geology of the area and be on hand to answer your questions. Interestingly, Doubtful Sound is not a Sound at all, but a Fiord. A Fiord is a deep and narrow sea inlet, usually characterised by long corridors of water flanked by high cliffs. Also bring a comfortable change of clothing, personal toiletries and overnight clothes such as pyjamas, insect repellent, cash for the bar, and a camera.

There was a nice spread with bacon, eggs, vegetables, toast, fruit and pastries, as well as tea and coffee. We decided to take our plates out to the observation deck to enjoy the view. Given my propensity for seasickness, I was nervous about sleeping on a boat in the middle of a fiord. But lucky for me the water was extremely calm and I actually slept very well. They had warned us the night before that it was going to be a fairly early wake up, so we weren’t surprised to hear the captain’s voice booming over the speaker system at 7 am.

Cabin Options

Colin and I headed back up to the mess hall just in time for the first snack of the afternoon, freshly baked scones with cream and jam. Once we arrived at Doubtful Sound, we boarded our boat and headed up to the mess hall/dining area for a quick safety briefing, crew introduction and to get our room keys. Colin and I were booked into a private twin cabin; we would’ve gone for a double but I don’t think any were left when we booked. The room was small but very cute and clean with a nice ensuite bathroom. Like its more popular neighbour Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound is actually a fiord, and not a sound, but was incorrectly named by European settlers. Maybe visit some of the earliest settlements of both European and Maori origin.

This is an awesome place where you’ll experience the raw power of nature. The sheer scale and beauty of the fiord makes for a profound experience for any holiday itinerary. For a more intimate experience, join us on a kayaking adventure where you get to paddle or explore and camp overnight in Doubtful Sound. And if you prefer not to drive to Manapouri (where the trips depart), we can get you there by coach from Queenstown and Te Anau.

These “bonus” features took it from a “fun day out” to “an unforgettable experience”. We have written a comprehensive guide about travelling from Queenstown to Milford Sound that would be worth reading to help you decide. The review and information that follows is unsolicited and unsullied by sponsorship.

In the morning, you'll wake up to a hearty breakfast, ready to complete the remainder of your Doubtful Sound boat trip before returning to Deep Cove and onwards to Manapouri. Winter (June to August) is an epic time to visit Fiordland, as long as you don’t mind the cold and shorter days! The weather is more settled than usual, with snow topping the mountains. If you’re very lucky, like me, you’ll even get to see it snow in Doubtful Sound!

If driving, make sure you fill your vehicle with petrol in Te Anau before travelling to Milford as there are no petrol stations at Milford Sound or en route. Patea aptly translates to ‘the place of silence,’ and to this day remains free of noise pollution, staying true to its peaceful name. But don’t worry if you miss it; you’ll definitely hear it! Fortunately, the crew calls out all events, so you can unwind in the warmth, knowing you won’t miss anything. In addition to staff that feel like old friends, what truly put them over the top for us was the authentic gourmet meals that accompanied the experience.

Very occasionally, the Wilmot Pass is closed to high levels of snowfall or flooding, when cruises are cancelled. I adored my Winter Doubtful Sound cruise, and don’t think I’d change my experience for the world. If you book the Doubtful Sounds overnight cruise, which we highly recommend, you will also enjoy a sunset and sunrise in the highly photogenic sound.

Board the Fiordland Navigator for a special dinner, bed and breakfast wilderness experience. Cruise across the crystal waters of Lake Manapouri to West Arm, take a coach across the dense rainforest of Wilmot Pass then stay overnight on this traditional heritage vessel. Cruise vessels and fishing boats ply the waters only seasonally. When you visit Doubtful Sound, it’s unchanged, pristine nature is striking. You are witnessing the same spectacular scene that greeted early Maori and European visitors – the years have changed little, if anything, in this magnificent place. Gone are the phones and the trucks horns and sirens; you are one with nature and it’s a surreal experience.

However, our recommendation is to only consider this experience if your trip is longer than 3 weeks. As much as we absolutely loved our experience, we would only recommend it if you have 3-4 weeks or more to explore the South Island. You could certainly make it a priority if you have any amount of time, of course.

Kayaking is an adventurous activity; there is a safety briefing before going on the water. Kayaking only occurs at the discretion of the skipper and is weather-dependent. Southern Secret Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruises is a local family-owned business with four generations of family offering hospitality in Te Anau and Fiordland for over 60 years. Come and join us to cruise Doubtful Sound aboard the MV Southern Secret. Southern Secret is a wonderful way to see the fabulous scenery and miss the crowds.

When it comes to scenery, expect rugged mountains, dense rainforests, and deep water. This place also has stunning waterfalls, and one of the biggest, Browne Falls, is 619 meters (2,030 feet) tall. The Southern Secret is a 20-metre vessel based in Deep Cove for the primary purpose of Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruises. With five ensuite guest cabins, spacious indoor & outdoor viewing areas and a cruising speed of 8-9 knots, the Southern Secret is the perfect setting for your overnight experience. Before I went on this cruise, i had read so many wonderful reviews and was getting worried about how these great reviews would set my expectations too high. But in the end, our Skipper Jason and our Chef Caleb lead us on a unforgettable and fun journey through Doubtful Sound...

With some of the most stunning wilderness in existence and famous wildlife, it’s part of the definitive experience of traveling to the Great Land’s wild interior. Upgrade your cruise to a Cruisetour and explore the Last Frontier on land either at the beginning or end of your northern getaway. Travel the Inside Passage on 10 or 11-day Alaska cruises from San Francisco and allow the natural landscapes to inspire your day’s adventures. Begin by sailing beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and along the Pacific Coast. As you voyage into the Inside Passage, enjoy one of the best ways to explore the fjords, small towns and natural landmarks with your favorite people. Alaska’s summer season begins in early May and extends until late September.

Every year Princess introduces more people to Denali National Park than any other cruise line. Sourdough is such an important part of Alaskan culture that long-time Alaskans are actually called sourdoughs in local parlance. Try a sourdough bread bowl filled with salmon chowder for a hearty lunch.

RELEASE YOUR WILD SIDE

Being the peak time of year, expect to pay 50% more than one offered in colder weather. But summer weather allows for outdoor activities without wearing heavy clothing. Although the average daily temperatures throughout Southeast Alaska are in the 60s Fahrenheit in August, extreme highs near 90 and lows below 20 have been reported. Expect the temperature to fluctuate by 30 degrees or more in a single day regardless of when you cruise. However, the shoulder season has become more prevalent in recent years, making great deals harder to find.

Enjoy two glacier-viewing experiences on every itinerary — including Glacier Bay National Park, and Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord. Kayak silent fjords on your journey along the coast of the Last Frontier. Let Celebrity’s award-winning ships take you to the most dazzling locations in the 49th state, from bustling Juneau to pretty Ketchikan. Or extend your stay with one of our Alaska Cruisetours to explore Alaska’s interiors.

There's nothing like seeing these behemoths hurl themselves out of the water, to splash back into the sea. Don't pass up an opportunity to watch these giants feed and play in the water. In some parts of the state, dog sledding is still the primary mode of transportation through the winter months. Visit Alaska and get the experience for yourself at the Skagway Yukon Discovery and Dog Sled Tour. The Siberian Huskies are sweet and energetic, and the ride is a thrill.

Mt. Denali is another option for cruisers, but be sure to check on the Mt. Denali weather with your cruise line. Temperatures are relatively mild, with daytime highs in the upper 40s and into the 50s depending on where you're visiting and cloud cover. Each cruise line has their preferred port—Holland America Line and Princess Cruises berth at Whittier.

Bring binoculars and scan both the shore and the waves for wildlife like brown bears and migrating whales while Park Rangers teach you the history and geology of the park. Closer afield, but no less secluded is the Prince William Sound Explorer from Uncruise, where guests will depart Whittier and wake up among the glaciers of little-visited Icy Bay on the Kenai Peninsula. So too should travelers who have specific non-negotiables on things like stateroom category, ship, or itinerary. Between the natural masterpieces and the animate personalities, every part of Alaska tells an extraordinary story.

In August, travelers experience long hours of daylight, ideal for enjoying the pristine landscapes and looking for wildlife. During this month, you can expect the weather begins to cool, higher rainfall, and gorgeous fall landscapes. Many cruise ships begin their summer deployments to Alaska in May before peak season begins in June. Cruisers can typically enjoy Alaska in October at lower rates than the Alaska summer cruise season prices.
